Collector Interview: Andy Barron
Posted on July 24 2020
Our interview this week features the vinyl collection of Nashville photographer, Andy Barron. Andy's photography caught my eye on Instagram many months ago, and his love for the music that makes him feel good is apparent in everything he shares here in this fun interview, and on his Instagram feed. Take a few minutes to read Andy's recommendations and take a peek into this cool collection!
Brief intro:
My name is Andy Barron and I'm a photographer living in Nashville. @andybarron, andybarron.com.
My very thoughtful wife gifted me the horizontal A-Z record dividers. We finally got some nice shelving to store my collection in, so it's nice to have equally beautiful dividers to match.
Size of your collection:
I actually need to figure this out haha, somewhere around 1000 though.
How do you organize your collection?
I organize alphabetical by first name, only because that's how discogs does it and it helps me keep things in order that way... most of the time.
What album/artist are you listening to right now?
Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Reunions
Soccer Mommy - color theory
Becca Mancari - The Greatest Part
Starflyer 59 - Miami
How does your record collection make you feel?
Thankful and nostalgic.
How long have you been collecting records?
The first LP i bought was Jimmy Eat World's Clarity back in 1999. I loved that album and when I saw the big cover in a record store i didn't even have a turntable at the time but I just knew I needed it. Once my love of photography and design and music developed, collecting record was just second nature.
Favorite music genre in your collection:
I'm pretty all over the map. Definitely lots of rock and 90s/00s indie/emo though.
Best album to listen to when you’ve had a rough day/week:
Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape, it's the perfect record to air drum to.
Best album to listen to when you’ve had a really great day/week OR you just really want to feel good:
The first one that came into my head was Katy Perry - Teenage Dream, so why fight it. If you don't feel happy listening to that record then something may be wrong with you.
Last record you purchased:
I just pre-ordered the new Sufjan Stevens record, pretty excited about that.
What is your beverage of choice when listening to records?
Coffee. Or whiskey. Or a martini. I guess depending on the time of day.
Where do you hunt for vinyl?
If I am at home in Nashville, my go-to's are Grimey's, Phonoluxe, The Groove. Fortunately with my job I get to travel a lot, so some of my other favorite stores around the country are Academy Annex in Brooklyn, obviously Amoeba, Park Ave Cds in Orlando, and I have yet to go there but I'm very excited to check out Limited To One the next time I'm in New York.
Anything else to share?
I need to get a better receiver and speakers. Do you have any recommendations for me? Hit me up on twitter or instagram and let me know!
